Project Overview
The Athlone Peaking Plant, located in Ireland’s Midlands, is a 100MW flexible gas-fired power station designed to support energy security and system reliability. It is part of a wider investment by Bord Gáis Energy and Centrica to strengthen Ireland’s electricity infrastructure.
Peaking plants operate during periods of high demand or low renewable generation, providing fast, responsive power to help balance the grid. The Athlone site is hydrogen-capable, supporting the long-term transition to lower-carbon energy sources.
Together with other flexible assets, the project plays a key role in enabling more renewable energy to be integrated into Ireland’s power system while maintaining a secure and resilient supply.
