Project Overview
Brigg Energy Park, located in Lincolnshire, is a 150MW flexible energy site combining fast-response gas-fired generation with battery storage. The site has been transformed from a former power station into a modern energy hub designed to support a more resilient and low-carbon electricity system.
The park includes two 50MW gas peaking plants, which provide rapid, flexible power during periods of high demand or low renewable generation. These are complemented by a 50MW, two-hour battery system, which stores electricity and releases it back to the grid when needed.
Together, these assets enable Brigg to help balance the grid, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support the continued expansion of renewable energy. With a combined capacity of 150MW, the site can power around 100,000 homes during peak demand periods, strengthening overall energy security.
Future of the site
Brigg Energy Park is also playing a leading role in the development of low-carbon technologies, including hydrogen.
In 2025, Centrica successfully completed a UK-first hydrogen-to-power trial at the site, demonstrating that hydrogen can be safely blended with natural gas and used in existing peaking plant infrastructure.
The trial showed that hydrogen blending is technically and operationally viable, creating a pathway to decarbonise flexible power generation while maintaining reliability when renewable output is low.
This positions Brigg as a key testbed for future energy solutions, supporting the growth of the UK’s hydrogen economy and contributing to a cleaner, more flexible energy system.
“The energy transition will only be successful if it’s secure, affordable and sustainable. The Brigg Energy Park plays a vital role in all three of these providing a level of resilience that underpins our energy future - a future that’s increasingly electrified and renewable.”
