Project Overview
Severn Power Station is an 850MW Combined-Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station located in Newport, South Wales. Acquired by Centrica in 2026, Severn is one of the UK's most efficient gas-fired power stations and a strategically important source of flexible electricity generation.
As the UK continues its transition towards a lower carbon energy system, flexible generation assets such as Severn play an important role in maintaining grid stability and energy security. The station can respond quickly to changes in electricity demand and renewable generation output, helping to ensure homes and businesses have access to reliable power when it is needed most.
Severn is capable of powering up to 6 million homes and forms an important part of Centrica's growing power generation portfolio. Its location in South Wales also positions it close to emerging sources of demand, including planned data centre developments, supporting the UK's future energy needs.
"The importance of reliable, flexible generation to balance the system continues to increase, keeping energy supplies secure and affordable as the energy transition progresses. Severn will play an important role in supporting that journey."
Chris O'Shea
Group Chief Executive of Centrica
Project timeline
Severn Power Station is commissioned and begins generating electricity as an 850MW gas-fired power station in Newport, South Wales.
The station is acquired by MPF Holdings, which later becomes Calon Energy.
Calon Energy enters administration, creating uncertainty over the future ownership of the site.
Centrica acquires Severn Power Station for approximately £370 million, adding 850MW of flexible generation capacity to its portfolio.
Why flexible generation matters
Flexible generation plays a vital role in maintaining a reliable electricity system as the UK increases its use of renewable energy.
While wind and solar power are essential to the energy transition, their output can vary depending on weather conditions. Modern gas-fired power stations such as Severn can respond rapidly to changes in demand and renewable generation, helping to maintain system stability and ensuring electricity remains available whenever it is needed.
By providing firm, dispatchable power and supporting critical grid services, flexible generation assets help keep energy supplies secure and affordable while enabling greater volumes of renewable energy to connect to the network.
