Jasmine Bowen, one of our Smart Energy Experts, tell us how she made her dreams come true by pursuing a career in engineering with British Gas.
Before joining British Gas as an apprentice, I worked full time as a manager in a bar while also studying Aeronautical Engineering at college. From a young age, I have always been intrigued in how things work. I wanted to gain more experience in electrical engineering, so I turned my curiosity into a reality and pursued my dream career in engineering and I thought British Gas would be a good place to start. When I saw the advert online, it specified a need for female engineers and therefore encouraged me to apply.
Throughout my training, I alternate weeks between our academy in Leicester and then working in the field with my mentor near my home address. Working with a mentor is so inspiring. He gives me the push I need to succeed, and he is so positive about my learning and progression. When at the academy, my day is made up of some theoretical work followed by practical sessions in the workshop. The structure of the course is highly informative, and the training is excellent. I have thoroughly enjoyed taking the knowledge I have gained in the academy, out into customers’ homes.
It doesn't matter if you join with minimal engineering background or no experience. Everyone is welcome to this role. Therefore, I would not only take every opportunity offered to you, but to go and seek opportunities for yourself too.
I did find this job challenging at first, working in tight spaces with minimal light is tough, but as the weeks go by, it has become easier, and every challenge I face feels like an achievement.
I have been most inspired by the diversity within British Gas as I love coming to work every day to be surrounded by people that bring different ideas and solutions to problems. The academy trainers are always so reassuring, encouraging me to do well and pushing me to be the best person I can be, both in my career and in my personal life. I believe it is one of the best training facilities compared to any other company in this industry.
It doesn't matter if you join with minimal engineering background or no experience. Everyone is welcome to this role. Therefore, I would not only take every opportunity offered to you, but to go and seek opportunities for yourself too. I am a firm believer that successful people are the people who put themselves out there.
