Project Overview
The Terhills Battery is an 18MW lithium-ion battery energy storage facility located in Dilsen-Stokkem, Belgium. Built using Tesla Powerpack technology, the site was originally developed on a former mining location and integrates with the Belgian national grid to provide fast-response flexibility services.
The battery supports grid stability by delivering frequency regulation and balancing services, helping to manage fluctuations in electricity supply and demand.
Future Ambitions
The Terhills Battery plays an important role in Centrica’s wider European flexibility strategy, supporting energy systems as renewable generation continues to grow.
Its ongoing optimisation and performance demonstrate the value of battery storage in markets with increasing demand for flexibility, particularly as Belgium transitions its energy system through greater use of wind, solar and reduced reliance on nuclear power.
“We’ll continue to maximise the output of the batteries, helping to provide back-up to the renewables grid and encouraging the growth of solar and wind power in Belgium."
Chris O'Shea
Group Chief Executive of Centrica
Project timeline
Battery began providing frequency regulation services to the Belgian grid
Service agreement with Tesla Belgium commenced

Centrica completed acquisition of the Terhills Battery
Why is battery storage important?
Battery storage turns renewable energy into a dependable, flexible power source, which is critical for reaching net zero.
Battery storage is essential to making renewable energy work reliably.
Balances supply and demand - Renewable energy like wind and solar isn’t constant. Batteries store electricity when it’s abundant and release it when it’s needed.
Reduces wasted renewable energy - Without storage, excess power can be curtailed. Batteries help capture that energy and use it later, improving efficiency.
Supports a stable grid - They respond almost instantly to changes in supply and demand, helping keep the electricity system stable.
Improves energy security - By providing backup power and flexibility, batteries reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help avoid supply disruptions.
