Project Overview
The Romme battery energy storage system is a 20 MW / 20 MWh grid-scale asset located in Dalarna County, Sweden, developed for Centrica as part of its growing European battery portfolio.
Built alongside a second 20 MW site nearby, the project provides essential grid flexibility by storing excess renewable electricity and releasing it during periods of high demand.
By helping to balance fluctuations in supply and demand, the Romme battery supports the integration of renewable energy and strengthens the stability of Sweden’s increasingly low‑carbon power system.
"As we continue to scale our significant investment in low‑carbon flexibility, battery storage will play a vital role in helping us transition to a more sustainable energy system."
Dave Kirwan
Managing Director of Centrica Power
Project timeline
Construction and civil engineering works began, despite challenging winter conditions.
Installation, system integration, and commissioning carried out by Omexom.
Project completion and systems brought online.
Public confirmation that the two Swedish battery systems (including Romme) are operational and supporting the grid
Why is battery storage important?
Battery storage turns renewable energy into a dependable, flexible power source, which is critical for reaching net zero.
Battery storage is essential to making renewable energy work reliably.
Balances supply and demand - Renewable energy like wind and solar isn’t constant. Batteries store electricity when it’s abundant and release it when it’s needed.
Reduces wasted renewable energy - Without storage, excess power can be curtailed. Batteries help capture that energy and use it later, improving efficiency.
Supports a stable grid - They respond almost instantly to changes in supply and demand, helping keep the electricity system stable.
Improves energy security - By providing backup power and flexibility, batteries reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help avoid supply disruptions.
