Project Overview
Sizewell B is a nuclear power station located on the Suffolk coast, near Leiston. It sits on the wider Sizewell site alongside the now-decommissioning Sizewell A.
It is the UK's only operational pressurised water reactor (PWR) and represented a major shift in UK nuclear design when it was developed, moving away from earlier gas-cooled reactor technologies. The plant generates around 3% of the UK's electricity and supplies enough reliable, low-carbon power for approximately 2.5 million homes each year.
Centrica has a 20% stake in Sizewell B, alongside EDF, and the station plays a key role in supporting the UK's energy security and net zero ambitions.
Future Plans
In July 2026, Centrica, EDF and the UK Government agreed Heads of Terms for a 20-year regulated Contract for Difference (CfD) arrangement that will enable Sizewell B to continue operating until 2055. The agreement provides a framework for the investment needed to extend the station's life beyond its original closure date of 2035, helping to secure the long-term supply of reliable, zero-carbon electricity for the UK.
The extension is expected to support around 900 skilled jobs, strengthen the UK's energy security and provide predictable long-term returns from one of Centrica's most important infrastructure investments. Alongside Centrica's investment in Sizewell C and advanced nuclear technologies, the agreement reinforces the company's commitment to supporting the UK's transition to a lower-carbon energy system.
"Generating around 3% of the UK’s electricity, Sizewell B is critical to delivering the reliable, zero-carbon baseload power that supports Britain’s energy security, protects skilled jobs and underpins a more resilient economy."
