Project Overview

Heysham 1 is a nuclear power station located in Lancashire, on the north-west coast of England. It is one of the UK's advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) stations and forms part of the existing nuclear fleet in which Centrica holds a 20% stake alongside EDF.

Commissioned in the early stages of the UK's second-generation nuclear programme, Heysham 1 has played a longstanding role in delivering reliable, low-carbon electricity. As part of Centrica's nuclear portfolio, it supports energy security, grid stability and the transition to a lower-carbon energy system.

In July 2026, Centrica and EDF announced a further two-year life extension for Heysham 1, extending its expected operating life to March 2030. Alongside Hartlepool, the station continues to provide reliable, home-grown electricity, helping reduce the UK's reliance on imported fossil fuels while supporting a secure and resilient energy system.

"These stations provide reliable, low-carbon electricity that supports Britain's energy security, protects skilled jobs and underpins a more resilient economy."
