Project Overview
The Roosecote Battery Site is a 49MW lithium-ion battery energy storage facility located in Cumbria, developed on the site of a former coal fired and later combined cycle gas turbine power station. Commissioned as one of Europe’s largest battery storage projects, it plays a key role in supporting the UK’s electricity system by storing energy and releasing it back to the grid in response to changes in supply and demand.
The site provides fast-response dynamic frequency services, responding in real-time, helping to stabilise the grid and balance fluctuations in renewable energy generation.
Future Ambitions
Roosecote forms part of Centrica’s broader strategy to expand its battery storage portfolio and enhance grid flexibility. Future plans include scaling storage capacity, integrating more renewable energy sources, and using smarter technologies to optimise how energy is stored and dispatched, supporting a more resilient, low-carbon energy system.
Why is battery storage important?
Battery storage turns renewable energy into a dependable, flexible power source, which is critical for reaching net zero.
Battery storage is essential to making renewable energy work reliably.
Balances supply and demand - Renewable energy like wind and solar isn’t constant. Batteries store electricity when it’s abundant and release it when it’s needed.
Reduces wasted renewable energy - Without storage, excess power can be curtailed. Batteries help capture that energy and use it later, improving efficiency.
Supports a stable grid - They respond almost instantly to changes in supply and demand, helping keep the electricity system stable.
Improves energy security - By providing backup power and flexibility, batteries reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help avoid supply disruptions.
