Project Overview
The Bullerforsen battery energy storage system is a 20 MW / 20 MWh grid-scale asset located in Dalarna County, Sweden, developed for Centrica as part of its wider Swedish battery programme.
Delivered alongside the nearby Romme site, the project provides vital grid flexibility by storing surplus renewable electricity and discharging it when demand increases. This capability helps to stabilise the grid, reduce imbalances in supply and demand, and support the continued growth of renewable energy across Sweden’s power system.
"As we continue to scale our significant investment in low‑carbon flexibility, battery storage will play a vital role in helping us transition to a more sustainable energy system."
Dave Kirwan
Managing Director of Centrica Power

Why is battery storage important?
Battery storage turns renewable energy into a dependable, flexible power source, which is critical for reaching net zero.
Battery storage is essential to making renewable energy work reliably.
Balances supply and demand - Renewable energy like wind and solar isn’t constant. Batteries store electricity when it’s abundant and release it when it’s needed.
Reduces wasted renewable energy - Without storage, excess power can be curtailed. Batteries help capture that energy and use it later, improving efficiency.
Supports a stable grid - They respond almost instantly to changes in supply and demand, helping keep the electricity system stable.
Improves energy security - By providing backup power and flexibility, batteries reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help avoid supply disruptions.
