Project Overview
The Knapton Battery Storage project is part of the redevelopment of the former Knapton gas production and power generation site in North Yorkshire. The site is being transformed into a flexible energy hub, combining battery storage with wider energy capabilities to support a more resilient and low-carbon energy system. The battery system will provide fast-response electricity to the grid, helping to balance supply and demand and support increasing levels of renewable generation.
Future ambitions
Knapton is being developed as a multi-vector energy hub, integrating battery storage with green hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and potential power generation. The site is expected to play a key role in supporting hydrogen-to-power solutions and contributing to the UK’s wider energy transition, including integration with the emerging East Coast Hydrogen network.
Project timeline

Gas production ceased and decommissioning began
Centrica acquired the Knapton asset
Construction began on battery energy storage system
Site energised and commissioning started
Potential next phase of development subject to funding and approvals
Why is battery storage important?
Battery storage turns renewable energy into a dependable, flexible power source, which is critical for reaching net zero.
Battery storage is essential to making renewable energy work reliably.
Balances supply and demand Renewable energy like wind and solar isn’t constant. Batteries store electricity when it’s abundant and release it when it’s needed.
Reduces wasted renewable energy- Without storage, excess power can be curtailed. Batteries help capture that energy and use it later, improving efficiency.
Supports a stable grid - They respond almost instantly to changes in supply and demand, helping keep the electricity system stable.
Improves energy security- By providing backup power and flexibility, batteries reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help avoid supply disruptions.
