New data released by Hive to mark Earth Day, shows that over the last twelve years, Hive smart thermostats have helped Brits save a whopping half a billion pounds on their energy bills.1 Collectively cutting back on enough energy to power the entire planet for two and a half days and preventing 1.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions being emitted into the atmosphere.
This milestone data highlights the positive impact Hive customers have been able to make on the environment, through their everyday actions.
Hive’s more than two million thermostat users have saved the same amount of carbon required to power over 539,000 homes for a year, make over 1 million return flights from London to New York, charge 560 billion smart phones, or drive over 6 billion petrol car miles – 240,954 times around the earth.
When launched in 2013, the Hive thermostat was an industry first in enabling customers to easily control their heating through their smart devices.

According to data from Hive, investing in a smart thermostat and using the Hive App to control your heating, can save you £192 per year on your energy bills2,, making it easy for users to see a return on their investment in eco-tech, and continuing to save them money whilst making a positive environmental impact.

1 Hive thermostats show an average 6% reduction in gas consumption in the year following installation after adjusting for variation in weather. 12-year savings from January 2013 to January 2025 calculated by modelling this monthly consumption reduction alongside customer sales history to calculate a cumulative gas reduction of 6,208.8 GWh. Costs were calculated according to the variations in average UK gas prices across the study period.
2 Saving of £192.84 based on the Ofgem medium annual gas consumption of 11,500 kWh at the April 2025 UK average unit price of 6.987 pence per kWh including VAT. Emissions saved per year: 508 kg CO2 (0.184kg per kWh). Actual savings will vary depending on individual circumstances
