  • British Gas will be gifting customers with half price electricity on Christmas Day as part of its PeakSave scheme.

  • The extra day of savings comes in addition to the extension of its PeakSave Sundays offering customers half price electricity every Sunday this winter – including Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

  • So far, British Gas has paid £2.5 million to 425,000 customers taking part in PeakSave Sunday events.

British Gas is giving customers an extra gift under the tree this Christmas Day as it confirms it will be offering half price electricity on 25th December through its PeakSave scheme.

The energy provider is also extending its PeakSave Sundays which offers half price electricity every Sunday between 11am and 4pm. The scheme will now continue to run next year, helping customers to make even more savings this winter.

British Gas has previously announced that the PeakSave Sundays will cover Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve as many Brits prepare for festive celebrations.

Customers will be rewarded with 50 per cent off all electricity between 11am and 4pm every Sunday this winter. The discount is available to new and existing PeakSave customers, and all savings will appear as a credit on customers’ energy bills. There is no obligation to shift your normal activities on the scheme, but households can save more by doing more energy intensive tasks on a Sunday.

PeakSave Sundays was launched to reward customers for better energy usage, supporting a greener energy supply. Typically, there is a greater amount of renewables available in the UK’s energy system on a Sunday because of lower demand from business and industry, which reduces the requirement for energy generated by fossil fuels.

Over 425,000 customers taking part in PeakSave Sundays have been paid £2.5 million so far for moving their activities to non-peak times and they have also contributed to a greener grid with almost 60 tonnes of Carbon emissions saved. They have shifted 3032 MWH of electricity to Sundays from other days of the week.

British Gas is also offering customers PeakSave Winter by taking part in the ESO Demand Flexibility Service where customers are rewarded for using less energy during peak periods - with British Gas passing on 100% of payments from the National Grid onto customers.  Last winter, British Gas customers received a combined total of more than £1.8m so there are even more ways for customers to save again this winter.

Catherine O’Kelly, Managing Director of British Gas Energy at British Gas, said: “The coming months will bring both colder weather and all of the excitement and fun of the festive season. We know many people will be spending more time at home during this period, particularly on Christmas Day, and we wanted to give a little something back to our customers helping them to save on their energy bills while also contributing to a greener grid.

“The results from the scheme so far have been really positive and show that half price electricity on Sundays is helping our customer to save money while also shifting usage away from peak times.

“We expect the benefit of these savings to increase through the winter, as home energy usage goes up, and we hope to welcome even more customers to the PeakSave scheme to take advantage of the savings.”
