We know that many customers will be concerned about energy prices right now and it will be difficult news to hear that our prices for our Standard Variable tariff will have to rise in line with Ofgem’s price cap increase from 1 April. Our priority is to ensure customers know how to get help from British Gas if they are struggling. We will be contacting them shortly to explain how their prices will change.

British Gas has a long history of supporting its customers in a number of ways financially. As well as directing them to the right services and advice that can help, we also provide advice on how to make our customers’ homes more energy efficient to manage their bills. Some examples of the type of help available are below:

  1. The British Gas Energy Trust – is an independent charitable trust funded solely by British Gas since 2004 and provides support to all energy customers, regardless of their supplier. The trust has provided consistent, financial help and advice for vulnerable households and is one of the largest, grant-giving energy trusts in the UK. The rising cost of living means more people are experiencing financial difficulty for the first time and need advice. If customers are worried about money and don’t know where to turn, the trust can advise on how they can help and where to go for additional assistance.

  2. The British Gas £2 million Winter fund - our recently launched fund is targeted to help our most financially vulnerable British Gas customers, providing grants between £250 to £750. So far, we have provided over £600,000 in relief to over a thousand customers.

While we continue to focus on providing support targeted to those who need it most, we’re also working with Ofgem to deliver the £200 rebate announced by Government earlier this month to help to all customers.

A British Gas spokesperson said: “The rising cost of living, including the price of energy, is a major concern for UK consumers and we know many of our customers will be deeply worried about Ofgem’s price cap increase coming into effect on 1 April. Since the start of the energy crisis, we’ve been working closely with Government and Ofgem to explore how best to shield customers from the global forces which are driving energy prices upwards. At British Gas we’re also providing help to those who need it most through the British Gas Energy Trust and our recently launched £2million Winter fund which is targeted to help our most financially vulnerable customers.”
