Centrica Tops Global 100 Corporations for Sustainability

Centrica has ranked as the best performing utility and the second highest placed UK company in the 2015 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations

Centrica has ranked as the best performing utility and the second highest placed UK company in the 2015 Corporate Knights’ Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World index. Securing eighth place in the annual index, Centrica earned its best result to date, marking a three-fold improvement since 2014.

The Global 100 index is recognised as a leading standard in corporate sustainability analysis. Centrica is one of only five companies to have featured in the index during its eleven years of existence, demonstrating a strong and enduring commitment to sustainable business growth.

The index is comprised of companies who feature as the top overall sustainability performers in their respective industry sectors. Inclusion in the index is determined by performance across twelve sustainability indicators, which span environmental, social and governance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as greenhouse gas emissions, safety and leadership diversity.

This result follows the top marks awarded to Centrica for disclosure and action on climate change by CDP, an international NGO representing around a third of the worlds invested capital.

Julia Rebholz, Centrica’s Director of Sustainability said: “As a leading integrated energy company, we have an important responsibility to help our customers cut their carbon emissions through innovative products and services, while securing energy our country needs in a safe and sustainable way. Inclusion in the index is a great achievement and reflects our continued focus on embedding responsible practices throughout our operations to benefit our customers, our people, the environment and our business”.

Michael Yow, Corporate Knights’ Lead Analyst said: “To be on the Global 100 is not an easy feat; only the best companies which are able to strike a balance between economic, environmental and social imperatives make the ranking. Centrica is one of those rare companies which clearly demonstrate this commitment to achieving that delicate balance”.

Of the eleven UK companies featured in the Global 100, Reckitt Benckiser Group were one place ahead of Centrica in seventh position. Other UK companies named in the list include BT Group at 15, Marks & Spencer Group at,16 Unilever at 22, British Sky Broadcasting Group at 59, Pearson at 68, BG Group at 80, London Stock Exchange Group at 88, British Land at 94 and Electrocomponents at 96.
