Simplifying URLs

The name of this training page is very long and it includes lots of special characters which can be really tricky to work out what the URL will be when live.

When live, the URL of this page would be https://www.centrica.com/training-guide/this-is-a-test-page-with-a-really-long-title-characters-which-id-like-to-shorten/

You might want to create a shorter/simpler URL for this page. There are two ways to do this:

Url Name

If you have a really long URL and you'd like to shorten/simplify it, you can use the Url Name in the SEO & Nav tab. This keeps the URL string before it and just changes the url part for this page. If you want to change the full URL string please look at adding a URL Alias (below).

  1. Always add a / before your preferred text
  2. You can use multiple words but don't include spaces. E.g. either /longpage or /long-page
  3. You can use numbers but don't use special characters

In this example, by adding /long-page in the Url Name, the url of this page changes to https://www.centrica.com/training-guide/long-page

Url Alias

This creates a new alias for the WHOLE url after www.centrica.com.

This is an easy way to create a vanity URL for a page, although you may choose to do all vanity URLs through the redirect manager instead to keep all of them in one place.

In this example, by adding /long-page in the Url Name, the url of this page changes to https://www.centrica.com/long-page (e.g. you have lost the "/training-guide/" part of the URL
