Help our customers be net zero by 2050
With around 90% of our total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions coming from our customers, the biggest thing we can do to fight climate change is to help them use energy more sustainably.
That’s why last year, we provided energy, services and solutions that cut the GHG intensity of our customers energy use by 10% against our 2019 base year – this is on track against our goal and equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 860,000 homes. Savings were largely driven by our renewable and low carbon energy tariffs alongside energy efficiency and optimisation solutions like air source heat pumps and Hive Active Heating.
We’ll remain focused on helping customers reduce emissions, including via our ambition to deliver up to 20,000 heat pumps and 100,000 EV charging points a year by 2025.
Be a net zero business by 2045
Having moved away from most of our carbon intensive assets to provide low carbon services and solutions for customers, we emit around 70% less carbon than a decade ago.
Towards our net zero target, our total GHG emissions decreased by 21% against the 2019 base year which is on track with our goal. Progress was largely driven by reduced emissions from our Whitegate power station as well as our gas production operations. Sustainable savings were also secured with the gradual roll-out of our electric vehicle road fleet alongside those from across our property portfolio.
We’ll continue to drive emissions out of our business and identify opportunities wherever possible to support the adoption of lower carbon energy for customers – from securing up to 800MW of low carbon and transition assets by 2025, to having a zero-emission road fleet by 2030.
