Centrica has partnered with X-energy to bring advanced nuclear technology to the UK, marking a major step forward in the country's clean energy transition.
Through a Joint Development Agreement (JDA), announced in September 2025, the partnership plans to deploy X-energy's Xe-100 Advanced Modular Reactors, with Centrica and EDF’s Hartlepool site identified as the preferred location for the first project. The fleet will add up to 6 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity, delivering cutting edge clean, secure and affordable power while mobilising significant investment, skills and growth across the domestic supply chain.
At Hartlepool alone, a potential 12-reactor deployment could generate 960 megawatts of low-carbon electricity – enough to power around 1.5 million homes. It would also create thousands of high-quality construction jobs and hundreds of long-term roles for decades of operation.
Working closely with Government, regulators and partners, Centrica and X-energy are helping make advanced nuclear a cornerstone of a resilient and sustainable UK energy system.
These UK projects will build on experience from two Xe-100 developments already underway in the United States – one in Texas with the US Government and Dow, and another in Washington State with Energy Northwest and Amazon.
"Our partnership with X-energy marks a bold step forward in delivering advanced nuclear technology that is not only scalable and secure, but also vital to clean industry and powering homes."
Chris O’Shea, Group Chief Executive of Centrica
