HELPING CUSTOMERS CUT THEIR CARBON

Climate change is one of the greatest global challenges facing society. With over 90% of our carbon emissions arising from customer consumption, the biggest difference we can make is to give customers greater choice, insight and control over how they use and generate energy. To build capabilities in this area, we are investing £1.2 billion in our Connected Home and Distributed Energy & Power (DE&P) businesses. A further £100 million is being invested in Centrica Innovations to identify, incubate and accelerate new technologies that help lead to a lower carbon future.

DECARBONISING THE ENERGY SYSTEM

Centrica is revolutionising the way energy is generated, managed and consumed, by leading the transition to an energy system that enhances grid flexibility, supports renewables and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. We are:

  • Helping customers improve how they manage their energy through our Connected Home and DE&P solutions;
  • Developing demand-response capabilities that balance the grid and reduce the need to switch on additional generation; and
  • Creating flexible power generation and battery storage facilities to meet peaks in local demand and back-up intermittent renewables.

REDUCING OPERATIONAL IMPACT

Having moved from an asset-based business to a customer-focused energy and services company, we emit significantly less carbon than before. We effectively manage and reduce our carbon emissions through technology, innovation and cultural change. This includes setting and achieving carbon reduction targets. In 2015 for example, we exceeded our target to reduce internal carbon footprint by 20% and are now working towards a further 20% by 2025.
