Our focus on being a responsible business means:

In doing so, we can make an important contribution to the issues that matter most to our stakeholders and to our business; from energy pricing and fuel poverty, to skills development and climate change. 

Our approach will not only help us satisfy the changing needs of our customers, but enable us to realise our goals to become a trusted corporate citizen, an employer of choice and a 21st century energy provider.

DECIDING OUR FOCUS AREAS

We determine which issues to prioritise by assessing their ‘materiality’ – the extent to which issues are important to our external stakeholders as well as our business.

To do this, we must fully understand the risks and opportunities facing our business, so we engage key external stakeholders such as our customers, politicians and NGOs, alongside internal experts from across the business. By prioritising issues through this process, we can effectively manage our impacts and stakeholder relationships by focusing resource, engagement and reporting activities on addressing the issues that matter most.

OUR REPORTING AND GOVERNANCE

Reporting our progress

Rather than publish all of our performance in one document at one time, we report throughout the year in a range of ways that are tailored to meet the different needs of our stakeholders.

In March 2016, we published a strategic update on our responsible business activities within the Responsible Business Update. The Update is supported by a data centre containing over 100 non-financial and financial metrics.

Throughout the year, we publish stories and news to share our performance in real-time. We also deliver additional reporting for specific stakeholders, such as our annual response to CDP on Climate Change, which is targeted at investors and is due in June.

To inform our reporting, we use external guidelines and frameworks that include the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). We do not, however, explicitly base our reporting on any individual guidance.

Assuring our performance

For the seventh consecutive year, Deloitte LLP conducted external assurance of our 2016 annual reporting. Deloitte used the International Standard on Assurance Engagements ISAE 3000 (Revised), to provide limited assurance on selected non-financial key performance indicators (KPIs).

Governing our activities

Corporate Citizenship is governed by the Safety, Health, Environment, Security and Ethics Committee (SHESEC). SHESEC supports the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities in reviewing the effectiveness of how we manage risks related to responsible business activities across the business.
