Centrica gas supplies to heat rural UK homes and businesses

Energy and services company Centrica plc has today sent gas to off-grid homes and businesses across the country thanks to the UK’s first commercial terminal capable of filling road tankers with liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Centrica’s LNG supplies will help supply Calor’s two million customers and keep its public refuelling network topped up after the two energy companies signed a new commercial agreement.

Under the terms of the agreement, made via Calor’s sister company PrimaLNG, Calor tankers will receive Centrica gas at the Isle of Grain terminal in Kent. It is possible thanks to a new loading facility installed at the National Grid site which opened for business today.

Centrica’s Global Head of LNG, Jonathan Westby said: “Our ambition is to grow our LNG business across the entire gas value chain and this relationship with Calor underlines the role that LNG can play in the UK’s energy market – in particular for off-grid customers and heavy road transport.

“With LNG becoming an alternative vehicle fuel, LNG will also play a critical role in reducing heavy vehicle emissions. We look forward to developing this market further with both PrimaLNG and Calor.”

Stuart Waudby, Commercial Operations Manager for LNG at Centrica, said: “Whilst we have been building our capability and market presence internationally, we are also focused on optimising our Isle of Grain LNG capacity. The Calor relationship is an innovative example of how the flexibility of LNG can be utilised in the UK. We see this as a growth area for our business and we are looking to build further relationships to deliver LNG for off grid applications, industry and manufacturing and road transportation sectors.
