ANEM2018 Analyst Energy Marketing Trading Graduate Programme 2018
Become an expert at turning data into useful information and influence key commercial decisions
Duration: 2 years (3 x 8 month placements)
Location: London, UK
Starting salary: £38,000 plus £3,000 starting bonus
Minimum requirements: 2:1 degree (2:2 if combined with Master's) in a numerical subject such as maths, physics, statistics, applied economics, chemistry, or engineering.
What does it involve?
Energy Marketing & Trading is our window onto the global wholesale commodity market. The teams here execute procurement and risk management strategies for British Gas and hedging strategies for Centrica’s Power and Gas production businesses in the UK and Europe. They also develop and execute their own trading strategies in response to market opportunities.
It is an entrepreneurial, innovative and fast-paced environment to work in, and the business has ambitious plans to diversify and grow. For example, we recently signed our first US LNG export contract, giving us the option to send cargoes all over the world.
As a graduate, you will be helping to provide the quality analytics on which the business depends. Working across a wide range of teams and functions, which could include Trading and Optimisation, LNG, Origination, Finance or Risk, you’ll support commercial decision-making and risk management, relating either to the origination and structuring of commodity contracts with clients or to the development and execution of trading strategies.
Over the course of your three eight-month placements, you will gain a solid foundational knowledge of how the energy markets and our businesses operate. Each placement has a steep learning curve and comes with its own unique set of challenges. On all of them, you will learn by working alongside experienced analysts while also benefitting from formal behavioural and technical training and a structured performance management process.
What you will need?
We’re looking for people who are highly numerate and have a very strong interest in the practical application of analytical techniques. This is essential, as you will be developing the critical skills needed to work with models, make and test hypotheses and turn data into decisions.
Another key quality we look for is relationship-management skills. You’ll need to be able to communicate and work effectively with a wide range of people, including colleagues, technical experts, business leaders and external parties.
It’s also important that you are business-focused. We need people who recognise that our businesses are driven by many changing factors, and who can use their entrepreneurial instinct to identify opportunities for innovation and growth.
“Over the last two years I have worked with industry experts in a variety of interesting and challenging roles across a growing trading organisation. The programme’s focus on training and development has given me the opportunity to gain skills and experience while making a meaningful contribution to the business.”
