This is a quantitative analyst role where the successful individual will be responsible for valuing complex commodity deal structures in the energy markets. They will be involved in the ongoing valuation through the deal life cycle and will inform on the appropriate trading analysis to assess the trading realisation of optionality. The individual will also be responsible for the development and enhancements of quantitative modelling to support valuation, optimisation and trading activities. The individual will be responsible for liaising with multiple partners, including Origination, Trading and Risk, and applying their commercial acumen to ensure an appropriate valuation or model is provided for potential deal structures.

Location: London

Salary: £120,000 - £135,000 dependant on experience

The Role

  • Valuation of structured transactions predominantly in both the power sector (including renewables, UK and European power structures) and gas sector (swing, storage, life of field off take arrangements) including assessment of appropriate inputs and modelling requirements to suit trading strategy
  • Assisting in the development of new pricing models and methods
  • Valuation and risk assessment of asset based transactions
  • Supporting the Load book requirements for valuing complex sales structures
  • Working closely with traders to assist in the analysis and development of trading strategy when required

The Person

  • Strong appetite for practical problem solving in a fast-moving commercial environment
  • PhD and Masters level qualification in a highly quantitative subject (for example finance, maths, science, engineering, mechanics).
  • Over 8 years’ experience in the energy sector with a detailed understanding of energy market fundamentals and physical constraints, (in particular; gas and power markets)
  • Should hold an excellent understanding of market dynamics and modelling methods, and demonstrate extensive experience in applying this to real-world transactions in energy markets.
  • Outstanding theoretical and practical knowledge of derivative instruments and understanding of valuation and risk analysis methods: as a minimum, must have an excellent understanding of the Black-Scholes model, the Least Square Monte Carlo technique and American Options Pricing theory
  • Excellent IT literacy - general computer programming experience is essential (e.g. Python, C++, VBA, or similar)
  • A strong preference for someone who has experience with, or the ability to adopt, extreme programming methodologies
  • Strong commercial acumen, combined with an understanding of financial risk and option value with practical approach to valuation issues
  • Ability to communicate complex issues in a clear, understandable manner to Traders, Originators, Management, Risk and other teams
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines in a trading environment
  • High attention to detail in both numerical analysis and written work
  • Strong influencing skills
  • Must show aptitude / willingness to adopt a fully agile approach to day to day work i.e. working as a pairing with other Quantitative Analysts or Quantitative Developers to find workable solutions
