Job Description

The Lead, Utility Operations – Alberta position will be responsible for providing strategic guidance related to market activities as well as representing the Company's interests on industry and other committees involved with formulation and modification of market operations and protocols. The Lead, Utility Operations – Alberta position will also serve as the primary contact for all Local Distribution Companies with which Direct Energy is a trading partner. 

This position will report directly to Director, Operations Alberta.


  • College degree; 5+ years in retail energy or similar industry with proven abilities at the management level
  • Knowledge and understanding of utility/ISO/Regulatory requirements and retail processes in Alberta
  • Knowledge and understanding of the retailer billed energy business and the impacts of market rules and changes
  • Excellent relationship building skills
  • Experience in operations, industry, processes and/or regulatory working group environments
  • Excellent communications skills and presentations skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, effectively managing multiple activities and meeting deadlines; Ability to multi-task is critical
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Ability to identify and resolve issues
  • Proven ability in decision-making
  • Advanced analytical and communication skills required
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites including Excel, Power Point, and Word
  • Detail-oriented individual
  • Must be able to speak in front of large groups and facilitate meetings
  • Strong interpersonal skills and aptitude for conflict resolution with effective negotiating skills
  • Motivated and team oriented


  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with competitors and utilities, leveraging those relationships to effectively influence overall processes and the regulatory environment to achieve operational goals
  • Stay abreast of Alberta market rules and changes, and gain detailed knowledge on specific market's business rules
  • Collect, interpret, and provide feedback to Company of market information
  • Research and understand modifications of various markets changes in advance of market implementation and communicate to Company
  • Propose market changes based on Company needs and work to get implemented by the market
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of corporate vision and strategy; incorporate into all aspects of job performance
  • Establish and maintain an understanding of business impacts from market rules and changes
  • Ensure escalated issues that arise daily are dealt with in a professional and efficient manner
  • Manage relationships with many external contacts, especially utilities, resolving and communicating issues that arise in a timely manner
  • Daily internal interaction with several internal departments, ensuring issues raised are resolved efficiently and effectively
  • Participation in cross-functional projects including sponsorship of AUC related projects that will enhance processes and optimize resources
  • Effectively work with Operations and IS to determine priorities and make comprehensive recommendations for continued process improvements
  • Establish and implement key operating metrics that reflect the impact and efforts of the team to operational and corporate goals
  • Provide input to the development and documentation of tactical plans to ensure alignment with corporate and departmental goals
