The role of the HSE Advisor is to guide and assist in the development, implementation and promotion of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental policies, standards, controls and behavioural and cultural change.

You will be operating in a enviroment utilising a variety of safety frameworks incorporating, direct labour, contracting, and franchising models, in domestic and commercial environments. and will sustain continuous improvement in HS&E performance whilst conforming to legislation, corporate policy and industry best practice.

The Role

Role Accountabilities

  • To ensure the robust identification and accuracy of reporting, of both technical and personal safety breaches
  • Ensure full compliance with the Heath, Safety and Environment Integrated Management System and Safety Assurance Process, providing safety expert advice and effective solutions on safety and technical issues to key stakeholder managers.
  • Implement processes and practices to ensure compliance with all current regulations with regard to health and safety, including technical and environmental criteria and drive solutions for continuous improvement.
  • Identify any operational and regulatory risks, escalating as appropriate.
  • Promote and instil safe and best practice working practices and behaviours within the businesses, and associated working partners, ensuring the well being of all employees and contractors and the safety of our customers.
  • Support the business through changes in regulatory and environmental legislation and advice the necessary stakeholders on the impact of any future changes.
  • Carry out and lead all incident investigations according to competence on behalf of British Gas and other 3rd party suppliers as directed by the business.
  • Lead all types of investigations, in accordance with the requirements of the Government appointed regulatory body and the HSE.
  • Provide safety and technical expertise and supports relevant media exercises to ensure that the work carried out is technically & legislatively robust.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of Technical Operational Procedures providing expert input to reviews and updates.
  • Operate information systems to the required standard to maintain accurate and secure records.
  • To provide a proactive HSE and technical support and advice to Operational line managers
  • Liaise closely with Operational Management and the Legal Department, to provide solutions to safety, technical issues and complaints as required in support of the British Gas brand.
  • Represent the business in HSE related court cases.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of Technical Operational Procedures providing expert input to reviews and updates.
  • Operate information systems to the required standard to maintain accurate and secure records.

Please Note:

  • The job holder will be expected to participate in a standby rota for out of normal working hours incident investigation and provide support for other health, safety and environmental incident requests

The Person

Skills and Experience

  • Expertise working within residential and commercial HSE environment
  • Knowledge of HSE systems and industry best practice implementation
  • Ability to influence others without line management authority
  • A good communicator who can interact effectively with the senior leadership teams, external stakeholders and contractors representatives
  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of the management of contractors and contracting companies
  • Be innovative in their approach to business challenges. Have excellent business acumen and be able to develop and use appropriate metrics to support initiatives.
  • As a minimum, NEBOSH Certificate – General & other qualifications as required by the role. If appropriate a Diploma would need to be obtained, or similar recognised level of qualification.
  • Experience in advising best practice in relation to health, safety and environment risks
  • Track record of delivering continuous improvements in safety culture and HSE performance
  • knowledge of contracting, gas and electrical mechanical, and civil engineering would be an advantage
  • Knowledge and experience of 18001 and 14001 auditing systems

Travel Requirements
Regular travel required to operational field and office based sites, within the UK
