Here at British Gas we are proud to have one of the largest insurance businesses in Britain, providing cover to millions of customers for anything from a faulty boiler to flood damage.
Crucial to serving our customers is data. Information is our lifeblood, and British Gas has invested heavily in Big Data capabilities. It’s therefore a great time for a talented Insurance Analyst to join our data team to help us enter this exciting new era with confidence.
Based at our offices in Staines-upon-Thames, you will play an active role in using data to maximise the reach and quality of our data and to provide the business with great insights through structured analytics using a mixture of well known tools and emerging ones.
Package circa: £50,000
What will you be up to
Your job will be to use the tools at your disposal (e.g. SAS, SQL, HiveQL, R, Excel) to proactively identify opportunities to embed new information into the insurance data model and to challenge the status quo by exploring different ways of analysing, presenting and visualising data to drive better business decision making.
To succeed, you’ll need to work closely with your Data Team colleagues, the wider Insurance community and our subject matter experts around the business, building solid relationships across the organisation. By mixing their experiences with your knowledge of the data and your analytical skills, you’ll have the opportunity to influence behaviour and decisions at all levels of the organisation, from engineers in the field up to our most senior executives.
Who we are looking for:
We need an expert in data. Your SAS/SQL skills will be very strong (a pre-requisite to enable you to hit the ground running), but we’re also very keen to speak to people who have used, or have a strong interest in learning, Big Data tools such as HiveQL for use on our new Hadoop platform and those who have experience with bringing market-leading visualisation software such as Qlikview to the table.
Our ideal applicant will have not just well-honed technical expertise, but also be someone who can bring new ways of thinking into our organisation and to help translate complex analysis to less technical audiences. They’ll be able to prepare large datasets from multiple complex sources for analysis but also have the commercial know-how to really separate the key messages from background noise when it comes to the crunch.
The perfect candidate won’t just be a skilled analyst; they’ll need to be big on collaboration, flexibility, reliability and results, and have the drive to make a difference to the business through the pride they take in their work. As a large insurer, we are particularly keen to hear from those who have had experience of working in this industry on consumer lines products, but we remain very open to consider candidates who are outstanding in all other aspects of the role.
