Requirements

  • MS or PhD degree in electrical engineering with power systems focus
  • Working experience related to power systems, transmission/congestion and generation analyses, ideally at an ISO
  • Deep understanding of generation commitment, dispatch in power markets, CRRs/FTRs and security-constrained economic dispatch is a must. Competence in running least-cost dispatch and power flow models (Examples include AURORAxmp, UPLAN, PowerWorld and PSS/E) is required
  • Exceptional mathematical and computer skills (PowerWorld, MATLAB, SQL and VBA are required) and the ability to perform advanced quantitative modeling
  • Familiarity with the ERCOT and PJM market design, protocols and their topology is a big plus
  • Must have basic understanding of principles of economics and finance
  • Must have basic understanding of power and gas trading
  • Must have strong analytical, verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to work independently on a variety of simultaneous projects
  • Must be a team player willing to learn new skills as well as sharing knowledge

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain and support tools, including models for forecasting short and long term energy, ancillary services and capacity prices
  • Provide reliable and timely analyses on daily, weekly, balance of month, and term market prices
  • Develop and implement tools for forecasting load for markets Direct Energy actively participates in and separate Direct Energy business units
  • Maintain knowledge of key market issues affecting ISOs, including market rules, regulatory changes, strategies and incentives of various market players, supply, demand, and other market drivers
  • Gather necessary data and do the analysis to answer questions on very short notice, and provide advice on a variety of market topics
  • Effectively communicate electricity and natural gas market knowledge to help formulate strategies for proprietary trading, asset optimization and load swing
  • Develop and document methodologies and best practices for performing analysis and research
