Primary Focus:

 

Responsible for recording and reporting Direct Energy North American power and gas gross margin residential activity for 3 markets across Canada and the United States.  This role is responsible for completing the necessary tasks and processes designed to facilitate a complete report, including analysis of the markets for which the analyst is responsible.   In addition, any concerns regarding the control framework and managing processes within that framework to ensure accurate financial statements should be raised to the Commercial Finance Director for Residential Energy. 

 

Responsible for taking the initiative to developing subject matter expertise in both Residential markets, while providing insight into monthly gross margin results, developing trends in each market, and working with counterparts within DE to improve gross margin forecasting, planning, and analytics.

Tactically, the role will manage gross margin planning, forecasting, analysis, and reporting for 3 markets, including related billings, volumetric data, and control processes.  Accurate and insightful reporting of the North American power and gas business activity is an expectation from the business, including understanding of market fundamentals, mark to market accounting, pricing and hedging strategy.

Requirements

  • Undergrad or Graduate degree with a major in finance or accounting.
  • 7+ years accounting or data analytics experience
  • MBA, CPA or CA designation is an asset, but not required
  • Advanced knowledge of commodity trading, mark to market and accounting fundamentals (including forecasting and analytical analysis of daily PnL movements for daily reporting). 
  • Knowledge of wholesale and residential energy markets a strong plus
  • Versatile to pick up new responsibilities and adaptive to ongoing changes
  • 5+ years of North America residential power and gas experience
  • Has strong understanding and experience of forecasting and budgeting processes
  • Is adaptable and responsive. Works well with ambiguity and rapidly changing priorities.

Responsibilities

• Improve communication channels between the Power and Gas Commodity Accounting, Commercial, and other internal stakeholders
• Capitalize on opportunities to enhance the understanding of the power and gas business with the DE Residential finance and management teams
• Help to create and enhance analytic measurements to improve knowledge and tracking of retail power and gas margin and business performance
• Ensure all power and gas margin activity is properly controlled, recorded, and documented through, manage monthly accounting and close processes for Power Gross Margin (including margin accruals), reconcile appropriate balance sheet accounts and actualization of commodity activity
• Work with internal and external auditors and provide support to auditors as requested
• Evaluate and implement process and system changes where necessary, which include working with IT and other stakeholder groups
• Producing insightful monthly and adhoc business review presentations, working closely with the Finance Director for Residential Energy and the NA Home Leadership Team.
• Liaising closely with Finance and Business colleagues, keeping them in touch with product development and ensuring they’re aware of current and future plans that affect their P&L’s
• Ensuring that reporting and insight provided by the NA Home team accurately reflects latest business strategy and priorities
