Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a quantitative field such as geophysics, math, statistics, or engineering and economics. PhD is a plus
  • Experience in fundamentals analysis in the natural gas sector. Knowledge of Eastern US gas markets is a must
  • Knowledge of related commodity markets, - such as electricity – would be an asset
  • Prior experience in optimization and trading activities in an energy trading environment (trading, asset optimization, risk management or portfolio analysis), preferred but not required
  • 5 years of modelling and coding experience; Matlab, VBA and strong Excel modeling skills are required
  • Good understanding of data mining and web scraping techniques is a big plus

Responsibilities

The Sr. Gas Market Analyst will be a member of the North American Strategy and Analytics team focusing mainly on Northeast Gas Markets, be located in Woodbridge, New Jersey and report into Calgary, AB. The role’s primary focus will be to support the optimization of the US Northeast C&I and retail markets for Direct Energy, the largest supplier of natural gas to commercial customers in the Eastern US.

Job Description:

  • Provide analytical support and expertise by conducting supply and demand analysis, by regional hubs, to depict market and pricing trends
  • Design, develop and support short-term optimization and trading tools
  • Provide ad hoc analyses for the trading desk: Identify traders’ needs and provide timely and tradable analyses. Collect data to support the traders’ requests and design, build and support automated data tools for the traders
  • Provide daily reports to the optimization desk and participate in weekly meetings by providing a fundamental outlook for the North East region
  • Assess regression and other techniques to determine the relationship between energy market variables
  • Provide updates on regulatory developments and analyses regarding the impact of changes
  • Investigate historical trends and analyze pricing volatility to evaluate if the data sources are valid and upgradable
  • Take initiative to continuously improve existing processes, tools and models with the aim of improving overall performance and reliability
