HVAC Technician need the following characteristics:

  • 3-5 years within the HVAC industry
  • Journeyman license ideal
  • Refrigeration and Gas Fitter experience preferred
  • mechanical ability
  • good co-ordination and manual dexterity
  • physical strength and stamina
  • the ability to work well with co-workers and deal with customers.
  • They should enjoy variety, solving problems and working with little supervision.

Current and up to date driver’s license.


At Direct Energy Home Services, a HVAC Technicians duties are as follows but not limited to:

  • Work from drawings or verbal instructions to mount or place system components.
  • Assemble and install refrigeration or air conditioning components such as compressors, condensers, evaporators, metering devices and line sets. Assemble and install furnaces and IAQ products, able to troubleshoot issues with equipment and wiring as well as associated items that are added to HVAC systems.
  • Install and calibrate related controls (including wiring)
  • Startup systems, test lines to detect leaks and record the readings taken to ensure that the system is functioning satisfactorily.

Maintenance work involves:

  • Checking all parts of a system.
  • Oiling moving parts.
  • Keeping units filled with refrigerant maintain a log book as to refrigerant usage.
  • adjusting valves.
  • Check temperature differences.
  • Filter replacements.

Mechanics also repair heating equipment, troubleshoot gas-fired equipment and calibrate gas-related controls.

  • Check gas pressure and adjust as per manufacture specs.
  • Check all safety controls.
  • Check temperature differences.
  • Inspect heat exchangers.
  • Carbon monoxide check.
  • Troubleshooting systems with Problem Cause and Solution method.

When there is a malfunction, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics diagnose the problem and fix the unit by replacing or repairing controls, electric wiring or other parts.

Working Conditions

The working environment varies greatly from one job to another. HVAC Technician work in a wide variety of environments, roof top, residential homes, commercial settings. They normally work 40 hours a week and overtime when required on a year round basis with on call for 24 hour service.

Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics may be required to lift and move items that weigh over 20 kilograms. There is some risk of injury when working with electricity, gases under high pressure and hazardous gases.
