The overview

This role will work closely with the Head of HSES (Health Safety, Environment and Security), ES&S , embedded Heads of HSES and Group Head of Environment to: Lead all aspects of the Environmental agenda for ES&S (Energy Supply & Services) including understanding all applicable legislation, regulation, policies and standards, their impact on ES&S and the actions required of the business to comply

The Role

  • Lead on developing and delivering all aspects of the Environmental plan including significant change initiatives for compliance or improvement purposes
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legal and other applicable requirements including internal policies and standards, across the ES&S business
  • To lead on the development and implementation of the Environmental plan for the business including the setting of objectives and targets
  • To ensure the highest possible standard of environmental advice is provided to ES&S leaders
  • To provide visible engagement with operational teams to ensure they have suitable awareness, information, advice and support to meet the requirements of the businesses Environmental plan and obligations
  • Develop and where required, deliver environmental training and briefings
  • To design, implement and deliver continuous improvement of the environmental management systems, documented policies and procedures including certification to ISO1400
  • To work with peers in other disciplines in the development and maintenance of the environmental requirements within the wider HSES/Business Management System
  • To lead a team of environmental experts and manage their performance
  • To provide functional leadership support to the environmental aspects of the HSE Advisors and site based Environmental reps to optimise environmental activities
  • To report environmental performance in alignment with group, and ES&S
  • strategy
  • Support the HSES assurance programme to ensure compliance through provision of subject matter expertise in audit planning and executio
  • To work with internal and external stakeholders, including supply partners, and promote continuous improvement to assist with the achievement of our environmental expectations and objectives
  • To monitor external developments and legislative requirements and support the business to develop the controls necessary to ensure compliance
  • To ensure appropriate input to the lifecycle of any relevant project to ensure environmental expectations are defined and implemented.

The Person

  • A background in the Energy and Utilities industry is desirable
  • Experience of developing/implementing ISO14001 Environmenta standard and integration within HSE management systems
  • Working and managing in a matrix organisation
  • A track record of managing a team of environmental experts and consultants
  • Working with external stakeholders including regulatory bodies to achieve the required outcomes for the business
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and relationship management skills. Able to inspire and lead others without line management authority
  • Ability to operate with senior leaders and operational managers
  • Technically competent in current Environmental best practice
  • Highly skilled in the analysis of technically demanding and detailed information and ability to quickly identify the underlying issues and trends
  • Strong capacity to be future focused in identifying risks and opportunities and their implications
  • Strong communication skills to be able to put across complex concepts and data in a way that is readily understood and actionable, using a variety of media
  • Skillful in engaging others with technical issues and maintaining their interest and enthusiasm
  • Skillful in distilling knowledge and building skills in others
  • The capacity to be pragmatic and practical in the way that technical issues are addressed
  • Extensive knowledge of HSE systems, practices and legislation 
