Training & Development

Our award-winning Summer Placement Programme is a fantastic opportunity to stretch and challenge yourself and develop both personally and professionally.

Our 10-week summer placement programme is a great way to experience what it's like to work for a fast-paced, forward-thinking organisation. All our students work on real life, business relevant projects which provide the opportunity to impact the way we work. The aim of the programme is to help you identify your strengths and make you more employable in the graduate job market, while increasing our business productivity – it's very much a win-win situation.

Whatever stream you choose, your project will provide a high level of responsibility and the opportunity to enhance and develop the fundamental skills required for working life. This programme has a high level of visibility within the business and you will have the opportunity to present your project outcome to senior managers at the end of the programme.

Training

Most of your learning will be on the job and driven by you. We have some exceptional line managers and you will be learning directly from them in keeping with your needs and aspirations. There will also be some centrally organised training activities, such as Excel training and presentation skills. You will be empowered increase your knowledge, perhaps through job shadowing, visiting a power station or joining a BG Engineer for a day on the road. There are lots of events and activities to get involved with – it's up to you to do so

Performance Management

Throughout your placement, your performance will be closely monitored. At the outset, your line manager will set you agreed objectives in your ”My Progress Document” (MPD), so you will know what is expected of you. Your line manager will also feedback on development areas based upon your performance at the assessment centre. You will also be expected to demonstrate certain behaviours linked to the Centrica leadership behaviours. It's not just what you achieve but how you achieve your objectives that counts.

You will have regular reviews with your line manager to ensure you are on track to achieve your objectives. At the end of the 10 weeks, you will have an end-of-placement review to discuss your progress. You will also be required to present on your achievements to a selection of line managers and other members of the senior leadership team. All these will be factors in whether you are offered a place on the Graduate Programme.

What you can expect from us

In return for your hard work and initiative, we will give you the support to make the most of the experience. You'll be:

  • Supported by a graduate talent manager assigned to your business area and responsible for overseeing your performance and development
  • Paired with a 'buddy' from our previous graduate or summer placement intake to help you settle in and answer any questions
  • Assigned a line manager with experience of the area of business in which you are placed
  • Further supported by the Central Graduate team, who are always on hand to help you get the best from the placement
