Training & development
Stretch and challenge yourself like never before
As well as giving you a real experience of what it’s like to work here, our 10-week summer placement programme will help you develop the fundamental skills required for working life.
Most of your learning will be on the job and driven by you, as you pick up skills and insights from the exceptional line managers who you’ll be working alongside. We also lay on some formal training activities in areas such as Excel and presentation skills. And, if you’re interested, there will be lots more opportunities for you to learn about our business, for example by joining a British Gas engineer for a day on the road.
We’ll monitor your performance closely throughout the 10 weeks to make sure you are getting the most out of our development opportunities and to assess whether you have the qualities needed for a place on our graduate programme.
At the beginning of the placement, your line manager will set agreed objectives for you, while also giving you feedback on your assessment centre performance and highlighting areas where you need to develop. To make sure you stay on track to achieve your objectives, you will have regular reviews with your line manager, including an end-of-placement review where you will discuss all the progress you’ve made. You will also be required to present on your achievements to a selection of line managers and other members of the senior leadership team.
And remember, it’s not just what you achieve but how you achieve it. We’ll expect you to demonstrate the Centrica values throughout your time with us.
There will be lots of people on hand to help you with your progress including:
- Graduate talent manager – responsible for overseeing your performance and development
- Buddy – a previous graduate or summer placement participant who can help you settle in and answer any questions you may have
- Line manager – who will have specific experience in your business area
- Graduate talent team – who will always be there to help you get the most out of your placement
