Summer Placement

A summer placement with Centrica is a unique opportunity to fast-track your personal development, fulfil your potential and get ahead of the game.

Programme information

Duration: 10 weeks (with 5 days' paid holiday)

Locations: UK-wide, with accommodation provided locally

Salary: £14,000 pro rata

Entry requirement:- Minimum 2:1 degree. You should be in your penultimate year but we accept applications from final year & postgraduate students providing you have a plan to return in September 2018, if you are successful in securing a graduate position with us after your 10 weeks.

What does it involve?

Our 10-week Summer Placement Programme is designed to increase your future employment prospects and provide a valuable resource to the business. During your placement you'll work on real projects with real responsibility, while benefiting from a wide support network of colleagues, a line manager and the Central Graduates team. Our aim is to help you build your strengths, gain skills that can be transferred to any workplace and stand out from the crowd. Our summer placements will appeal to self-motivated, penultimate-year students with a proactive, can-do attitude and a genuine desire to learn about our business and industry.

Your placement will be in one of the following areas:

Analyst - British Gas

The British Gas Analyst Summer Placement Programme will see you undertaking a project within a diverse array of teams and functions across British Gas to gain a detailed insight into a career as an analyst. We are looking for highly numerate and driven individuals who appreciate that energy businesses are driven by many factors. Minimum requirements: 2:1 degree or Masters (with 2:2 degree minimum) in a numerical subject. You must be in your penultimate or final year of study.

Customer Insight

Customer Insight is a dynamic, diverse team that covers the entire end-to-end Customer experience. Combining advanced analytics with a huge variety of market research techniques we are able to create powerful Insights into who are Customers are, how they behave and what they think about us. This, together with making sure our data is as accurate as it can be means we can optimise our campaigns and make sure we’re targeting the right Customers at the right time.

Minimum requirements: 2:1 undergraduate degree, or a 2:2 with a post graduate degree, in a numerate discipline, such as  maths, physics, statistics, applied economics, chemistry, or engineering.  You must be in your penultimate or final year of study.

Customer Operations

On the Customer Operations Programme, you will work within our British Gas business. Your project will give you the opportunity to work with a variety of different people, across a wide range of operations in our frontline business to develop your skills. Engineering

Our UK-wide Engineering placements offer mechanical, electrical, chemical and control & instrumentation student engineers a great opportunity to experience gas processing, electricity generation and gas storage. A full driving licence (upon starting the programme) is required. For more information, please visit the individual graduate programme pages.

Minimum requirements: In final year of study, with expected minimum 2:1 BEng degree (and planning to complete a MEng post placement) or penultimate year of study with expected minimum 2:1 MEng degree. Your degree must be accredited by the relevant engineering institution (for example IET, IMechE or IChemE).

Finance

The Finance stream of our Summer Placement Programme is a chance to see if a career in finance might be for you. You'll work with finance professionals who'll show you the key role finance plays in the energy industry and how finance supports our whole organisation. All degree disciplines are acceptable. Minimum requirements: Equivalent to BBB at A-Levels and a 2:1 degree in any discipline. You must be in your penultimate or final year of study.

Health, Safety, Environment and Security

This exciting scheme gives you a real-life look at a graduate career with us, and how you could help us understand, manage and reduce the ecological and human impact of our activities. For example, you will discover how we are developing cutting-edge green technology to reduce Britain's carbon footprint.

Minimum requirements: 2:1 degree or Masters (with 2:2 degree minimum) in an engineering or science (including social sciences) based degree. You must be in your penultimate or final year of study.

Human Resources

Our HR Summer Placement Programme will see you undertaking a key project within the business. HR is a hugely varied, strategic and hands-on area of the business and whatever project you do will ultimately help our business meet critical goals and objectives. Minimum requirements: 2:1 degree or Masters (with 2:2 degree minimum) ideally in an HR discipline. You must be in your penultimate or final year of study.

Information Systems

Our in-house Information Systems (IS) team supports the business from the initial purchase of energy to the accurate billing of our customers. These UK-wide placements will suit students who have an interest in technology but who can also display a wide range of skills, particularly the ability to present complex ideas clearly and simply. Minimum requirements: 2:1 degree or Masters (with 2:2 degree minimum) You must be in your penultimate or final year of study and able to demonstrate an aptitude for IT.

Commercial Marketing

On our Commercial Marketing Summer Placement Programme, you will work within our British Gas business. Energy is an extremely dynamic market and this an exciting time within the Commercial Marketing team. During your placement, you will undertake a project with real responsibility that will help to shape our business strategy. Procurement and Supply Chain

Our Procurement and Supply Chain Graduate Programme enables inquisitive, commercially astute graduates to access all aspects of our organisation and understand the energy supply chain – from Upstream oil and gas exploration through the retailing of energy to businesses and customers. Our approach to procurement is not solely focussed on cost; we ensure that our supply chains are ethically sourced and that our suppliers hold the same high standards that we do and can bring new value to our business.

The best thing about my role is that I get to travel quite a lot – at the very start of my placement I went to Amsterdam for a 3D model review. I've learned so much beyond the scope of my work here at Centrica and it's not about to stop.

What can you expect from us

In return for your hard work and initiative, we will give you the support to make the most of the experience. You'll be:

  • Supported by a graduate talent manager assigned to your business area and responsible for overseeing your performance and development
  • Paired with a 'buddy' from our previous graduate or summer placement intake to help you settle in and answer any questions
  • Assigned a line manager with experience of the area of business in which you are placed
  • Further supported by the Central Graduate team, who are always on hand to help you get the best from the placement

Beyond this support, we will provide you with accommodation close to your placement. With other students also based in the area, you'll have a ready-made network wherever you end up.

The Summer Placement Programme offers a real-life look at what it might mean to be a Centrica graduate. If you perform well in your placement, you could even return to your university with an offer to join the graduate programme after your graduation.
