What We Do

Distributed Energy and Power

HomeAbout UsWhat We DoDistributed Energy and Power

Centrica has established an international Distributed Energy and Power business as part of its strategic review, marking a new, more customer-focussed direction for the Group.

The new business brings together the shared expertise of Centrica’s Power and Energy Construction Services teams in the UK, and members of the US Direct Energy team to deliver distributed energy solutions for business customers. We expect to invest £700 million into the business by 2020.

Combined, our UK and US businesses already have over 1,000 customers across 3,700 sites. In November 2015, we added a further 164 customers to our portfolio through the acquisition of Panoramic Power, a global pioneer in energy management that has developed and delivered patented, wireless sensor technology across 750 sites in 30 countries.

Distributed Energy Explained

How Panoramic Power Solution works

We want to help businesses and other large energy users to take control of their energy by giving them the power to operate, monitor, and optimise their energy assets. We want to make the most of customers’ assets and give them the confidence that what they’re paying out on energy is money well spent.

A first step in taking control is to understand exactly how businesses are using, and losing, energy on site.

Our Panoramic Power team is a global pioneer in energy management solutions, offering an innovative and affordable solution for customers. This award-winning product brings together wireless sensor technology and cloud-based analytics to give customers actionable insights into their energy usage.

Centrica’s fleet of gas-fired power stations consists of a mix of both large-scale generation plants and smaller sites that are together capable of producing enough electricity to power almost three million homes.

We believe that smaller power stations have a key role to play in the UK’s energy future so we’re exploring opportunities to develop a series of new distributed generation units to complement our existing assets. These highly flexible gas-fired engines would be embedded into the local distribution networks and operate as ‘peaking plants’ meaning that they would be able to step in to support security of supply at periods of high demand. We’re also looking at battery storage as a further tool to support the UK network.

Centrica owns six gas-fired power stations in England and Wales, with a total capacity of around 3.7GW

  • Glanford Brigg
  • King's Lynn
  • Langage
  • Peterborough
  • South Humber Bank

We also have long-term contracts with two other gas-fired power stations: Spalding in Lincolnshire and Rijnmond 2 in The Netherlands. These are owned and managed by an independent company, but Centrica supplies their gas and takes up to 100% of their power output.

Together with partners, Centrica owns the 270MW Lincs offshore wind farm, located off the North East Lincolnshire coast. Commissioned in September 2013, Lincs is operated and maintained out of a dedicated renewables base in Grimsby.

We also operate the Glens of Foudland, Lynn and Inner Dowsing wind farms from the base, providing support to the wind farms 24/7, 365 days a year. Combined, the wind farms are capable of producing enough electricity to meet the needs of nearly 350,000 homes.

As part of our joint venture with EDF, Centrica Energy owns a 20% stake in EDF Energy Nuclear Generation's eight nuclear power stations, giving us rights to 20% of the total output (9,000MW).
