Graduate FAQs

Your location will depend on which programme you choose. You must remain geographically flexible throughout the programme and throughout your career. Some programmes may offer international opportunities. More information is available on each stream specific page.

While we aim to offer a choice of locations, all graduates should remain flexible with regards to placements.

The graduate programme will begin at the beginning of September.

At Centrica, we adopt a 'blended learning' approach to your development. This includes on the job training, structured performance management, as well as formal training activities. Your programme will be balanced and structured, with a stream specific development path, supported by the business and a focus on Centrica's Leadership behaviours.

Your technical skills are honed throughout your placements, and give you a broad business experience. A dedicated talent board will source the very best opportunities for you and the graduates in your stream.

A structured support network will aid your progression. Firstly, your line manager will help you on a day to day basis ensuring that you have everything you need to perform in your role, and will undertake regular performance reviews with you. Secondly, your Graduate Talent Manager will provide ongoing support during your time on the programme and will provide advice on suitable rotational placements. Thirdly, your career mentor will help guide you through the programme and into your first substantive role with Centrica.

Throughout the course of your graduate programme, you will develop self awareness and an understanding of the need to drive your development, and a number of opportunities will be available to hone these skills. For example, as a university campus manager you can develop your leadership and project management skills by leading a team responsible for recruitment activity at a UK university. Or, by volunteering to coach summer interns or work on projects for charities you can develop a range of skills such as coaching techniques, collaboration and influencing.

We believe professional qualifications are vital for our functional specialists and so, where relevant, you'll have the chance to study for professional qualifications.

A buddy will be assigned to you once you have accepted your offer of employment and returned your signed contract; these are current graduates. They will be on hand to give you advice based on their experiences, such as settling into your location or your first placement, enabling you to make a smooth transition into Centrica.

A Graduate Talent Manager assigned to your functional stream, will be responsible for overseeing your performance and development during your graduate programme. They will call you to welcome you to Centrica soon after you join and you will meet them during induction week.

Your line manager will be your first point of contact during your placement. He or she will call you before you join to welcome you to the area of the business and discuss the role with you.

The Central Graduate Team manage the programme centrally and will be on hand to give you any further support you need during your time with us.

As an international company we are able to offer some international opportunities to graduates although these are limited to specific streams and are dependent on business need.

In the past our graduates have been based in US, The Netherlands and Norway. However, this is down to business need and can vary from year to year.

Unfortunately, Centrica cannot accept deferred applications. If you're taking a gap year to broaden your horizons through travel, work experience or voluntary work or you are embarking on further studies, we would love to hear from you. You could either consider our summer placement programme for this summer with the view of trying to secure a graduate role for September 2015. Otherwise please submit your graduate programme application next autumn.

The graduate talent boards have overall responsibility for the deployment of graduate talent within their stream. The roles will be dependent on three main criteria; business need, personal aspirations and developmental need.

The talent board will ensure the opportunities presented to you will enable you to get the experience needed to leave the graduate programme as a professional in your specialist area.

Flexibility is essential in order to maximise your opportunity on the graduate programme.

Yes. We encourage graduates to take part in activities outside their job role. Our university campus teams are made up of graduates who go back to campus in order to promote the opportunities at Centrica. If you make it through to the assessment centre, you will no doubt be introduced to some current graduates who will be able to tell you about their experiences on the graduate programme.

There are also opportunities to get involved with our blogging and social media activities to let everyone know about your experiences on the graduate programme if you are successful. We also look for graduates to help at assessment centres to facilitate and answer questions from the students applying.

Graduates also take part in a charity challenge.

You are paid an initial starting bonus of £3,000 which should be used for any relocation costs that you may incur throughout your time on the programme, no further financial support is offered. During rotation periods graduates will be given sufficient notice so that any necessary arrangements can be made. The graduate team cannot provide advice regarding accommodation at specific locations. The current and ex-graduate network is very supportive and can offer advice when you change locations.

We do have a deadline, please look at the individual programmes for more information. Please note that as we run an ongoing selection process, we may fill vacancies earlier than the advertised date and thus may close sooner than this deadline. Please apply early to avoid disappointment.

Please do take time to read the information about each programme so you can make an informed decision about the graduate programme that you want to apply for. In some cases if your preferred graduate programme has been filled, you can ask to be transferred to another graduate programme or onto a summer placement programme if you have a strong desire to pursue another route.

We do run a Summer placement programme during that time but this programme is designed for students who are looking to begin their graduate programmes the following September. On occasions opportunities are advertised to graduates through the onboarding group but generally we are unable to offer graduates any job opportunities before they join the graduate scheme.

As a Centrica graduate, you are on a permanent contract. Towards the end of your graduate programme, lists of substantive roles are submitted by the talent boards of each stream. All graduates are expected to be offered a permanent role, but flexibility is very important.

Adjustments for visual impairments, non-native English speakers and other conditions affecting reading speed

Our assessments are fully compliant with screen readers and refreshable Braille. All pages within the assessments are re-sizable and can be switched to high-contrast colours. You can adjust the web pages through your browser (press the Ctrl key while resizing with the up & down cursor keys or your mouse wheel) or click on the Accessibility icon for a menu of different sizes and colours.

The personality questionnaire requires no further adjustment because it is not timed - it will therefore not impact adversely on candidates whose reading speed is potentially affected by visual impairment, language issues or conditions such as a dyslexia.

The ability tests, while timed, do not require further adjustment. The time limits are deliberately generous to avoid adverse impact on those candidates whose reading speed is potentially affected by visual impairment, language issues or conditions such as a dyslexia. The verbal test contains business English and does not require culture-specific knowledge. The numerical test keeps verbal information to a minimum to prevent scores being contaminated by reading speed. However, if you are still concerned then please do let us know.

If you believe you have a condition that may affect your application you need to bring this to our attention during the application process so we can combine this information along with all the other information we gather from you during the process, including the assessment results.

Our application form has been designed to ensure that you have the opportunity to show us how you could match against our leadership behaviours. It gives us more in-depth information and examples of when you have been able to demonstrate these behaviours which a CV would not be able to show us.

The application system will automatically send a number of emails after the date you initially register to remind you to complete your application (after 2 days, 5 days and a final email 28 days after you initially registered to inform you that your application has been withdrawn). These emails are sent out based on when you registered, as opposed to when you last logged into your account, so please try to complete your application within 28 days of initially registering.

If you receive notification to advise you that your application has been withdrawn, please reply to the email and ask for your application to be reactivated (as long as the programme that you are applying for is still open) and the team will reinstate your application and you continue where you left the application.

How to reset your test

Our ability tests have time limits so you will need to work quickly but accurately. You also need to complete each test in a single sitting - if you leave the test partway through the clock is still ticking - you will not be able to resume the test from the point where you left off; the test timer will continue to count down in your absence. So don’t leave the ability tests before you’ve completed all the questions!

Unfortunately, with the internet being how it is we know that sometimes a small number of candidates have connection problems when taking the tests and are forced to leave the tests partway through. To minimise these problems we recommend, where possible, you try and use a reliable web connection and PC.

If you are forced to exit an ability test partway through you can request a test reset. This will wind the test-timer and your score back to zero. You will be able to start the test again from the start - but you will not be given the same questions that you saw on your first go.

To reset a test you need to log back into your application and click to continue the assessments. On your assessment progress page you will see that the option to reset has appeared next to the affected test; click this to reset the test.

The first time you request a reset the assessment system automatically checks your previous test session to make sure your request is valid. If you reset a test more than once a member of the graduate recruitment team will check your request manually – so please expect a short delay.

Please note that the reset facility only applies to the ability tests. You can not reset the personality questionnaire because it is not timed.

It is important to be aware of fraudulent recruitment activity. We will never offer anyone a job or contract without first having gone through a detailed recruitment process involving at least one face-to-face meeting or assessment centre.

If an offer looks fraudulent, it probably is. Offers coming from email accounts which are not from the Centrica group – such as .yahoo, .msn, .hotmail accounts – are fraudulent. Do not share personal information with these accounts and report anything suspicious to careers@centrica.com.

Centrica takes the protection of our customers, our people, our brand and their data / assets very seriously. The principals underpinning our pre-employment checking process are that in making recruitment decisions we do our utmost to:

  • Ensure our customers, our people and the public are safe from and not caused harm by our employees
  • Protect our customers’ (and our people’s) assets from theft or misuse by our employees
  • Protect the company’s assets from the same
  • Protect the Centrica / British Gas reputation and brand

The checks conducted will vary depending on the role you've been recruited for. In all cases we will check your right to work in the UK. In addition we will conduct credit history, 3 or 5 year employer references, criminal record, qualification and education checks as appropriate. In some limited cases we may do FSA and Director checks.

Where it's deemed appropriate to the role you've applied for, we will obtain a Basic Disclosure Check. In a limited number of cases a higher level of check may be conducted but where this is the case it will be stated in advance. The Basic Disclosure Check will confirm to us any convictions (including road traffic offences) not considered spent under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Yes. When asked you should declare any unspent convictions (no matter how irrelevant you may feel they are) on your application or at the earliest opportunity. If you fail to self declare and a conviction is brought to our notice via the check, we may view this as an attempt to conceal the offence from us.

It is your responsibility to know if any offence you've committed is spent or not. If you're unsure you should seek guidance from the issuing authority. Please note that this will include road traffic offences.

No. Not all roles within Centrica require a criminal record check. Where the role does require the check, some of the factors we would take into consideration are:

  • The nature of the offence(s)
  • The role you have applied for
  • Were the offence(s) fully and openly declared to us in advance or did we only become aware as a result of the disclosure check
  • Does the disclosure show more than one offence committed over a period of time
  • Would the penalty imposed in relation to the offence(s), negatively impact on your ability to carry out the duties of the role

Having fully considered the matter we will take a realistic view as to whether or not the offence committed impacts on our ability to employ you in the role.

The standard credit check conducted by Centrica looks for any bankruptcies, county court judgements, sheriff court decrees, individual voluntary arrangements and trust deeds registered in your name.

Yes. When asked you should declare any bankruptcies, county court judgements, sheriff court decrees, individual voluntary arrangements or trust deeds on your application or at the earliest opportunity. If you fail to self declare and an issue is brought to our notice via the check, we may view this as an attempt to conceal it from us.

No. Not all roles within Centrica require a credit check. Where the role does require the check we will take a realistic view as to whether your adverse credit report in its entirety, fits within what we consider to be an acceptable limit.

Centrica takes the prevention of illegal working very seriously. A failure to comply with the UK Border Agency's (UKBA) requirements in relation to illegal working, carries both civil and criminal penalties for Centrica and potentially members of staff. Accordingly, Centrica is unable to employ anyone who does not have the legal right to live and work in the UK.

Centrica is a registered sponsor under Tier 2 of the Points Based System (PBS). However, Centrica is only able to consider offering sponsorship to applicants that meet the UKBA's requirements under Tier 2 (General) of the PBS. Please note that Centrica's ability to sponsor employees under Tier 2 of the PBS is very limited.

If your application is successful, your appointment and continued employment with Centrica will be conditional upon you ensuring that you have or secure the right to work for Centrica, and that you continue to retain the right to work and carry out your role. You will be unable to start employment with Centrica until you have provided Centrica with satisfactory original evidence of your right to work and carry out the proposed employment legally in the UK.

If, at any time, during your employment with Centrica you are unable to demonstrate evidence of your right to live and work in the UK Centrica may have no alternative but to dismiss you without notice.

If you have a valid visa which allows you to live and work in the UK within an immigration category appropriate to the role in question you can apply for the role. All job offers will be made on the basis of suitability for the post, but will be conditional on you having or securing the right to work legally  in the post.

Centrica may, in limited circumstances, be able to provide support to applicants who do not already have the right to work in the UK, in order to assist them in meeting the UKBA requirements.

During the recruitment process  all candidates will be required at interview stage to provide original evidence to demonstrate their right to live and work in the UK. It is a migrant’s responsibility to provide us with evidence of their right to live and work in the UK.

During the recruitment process all candidates will be required at interview stage to provide evidence to demonstrate their right to live and work in the UK. It is the migrant’s responsibility to provide us with evidence of their right to live and work in the UK. If you have submitted an application to the UKBA to renew, or extend  your visa, or to switch immigration categories  we will, if you are shortlisted, expect to see copies of your documents with details of your application, and that it was validly submitted. Any offer of employment may be conditional on your application to extend or renew your visa or switch categories being approved.

Centrica will, in limited circumstances, consider providing support to applicants in order to assist them in meeting the UKBA requirements.

Graduates have already proved they are academically capable, and Centrica is looking for these graduates to take on new challenges as they work through the graduate programmes. We do have opportunities available for applicants with a variety of skills and qualifications and so if you do not feel that the graduate or summer placement programmes apply to you, please visit our Careers website at www.centrica.com/careers.

Our minimum requirements are that you have or are predicted to get at least a 2:1 degree classification for most of our programmes. Some require a Masters degree. If you have a third-class degree, you will not be eligible for the programme. We do advertise vacancies outside of the Graduate and Summer placement programme on our central careers website www.centrica.com/careers.

We can only accept one application per person per academic year for both the Graduate and Summer placement programmes. If you have been unsuccessful in applying for a programme, we will be unable to accept another application form in the same academic year.

If something interrupts your completion of the timed part of the online assessment you can request a test-reset. This will wind your score and the timer back to zero so you can start again. You will be asked to provide a reason for the reset request and we may choose to verify your final test score to make sure it is a fair and accurate measurement of your ability.

Unfortunately we cannot give detailed information about the way in which the online assessments are scored. We advise you to work quickly but accurately and never to simply guess an answer. If you are unsure you should give the answer you think is best.
