British Gas supplies gas and electricity to UK residential and business customers, provides central heating and gas appliance installation and maintenance and low-carbon and energy efficient products and services.
In 2009, British Gas was restructured and is now run as a single business, focused on meeting the energy and related service requirements of our customers. British Gas New Energy is now also part of the overall structure.
These changes, which will continue across 2010, position the business well for further growth through improved customer retention, cross-selling, development of new energy related products and cost efficiencies.
Operational efficiency and customer service improved across the business in 2009, and a continued focus on safety issues resulted in a 53% reduction in lost time incidents. This progress led to higher employee engagement and customer satisfaction levels, which, combined with our residential energy price reductions, helped deliver customer growth in every part of the business.
We welcomed the UK Government's announcement in July 2009 regarding its plans for a full national roll-out of smart metering by 2020. We already have an industry-leading position in the installation of smart meters for businesses, with more than 50,000 installed, and in July we announced that we are bringing in-house the installation, repair and maintenance of meters, currently carried out by third parties.
Our website britishgas.co.uk allows customers to manage their bills, protect their homes, obtain advice on home improvement and help when moving home.
Residential energy supply
We are the biggest energy supplier in Britain's domestic market. Operating under our British Gas brand (Scottish Gas in Scotland), we had 15.7m gas and electricity customer accounts at the end of 2009.
Residential services
We are the largest operator in the installation and maintenance of domestic central heating and gas appliances in Britain.
Business energy supply and services
We are Britain's leading supplier of energy to businesses, from small and medium-sized enterprises through to large multi-site users.

Phil Bentley – Managing Director
Phil Bentley joined Centrica plc as Group Finance Director in 2000, a position he held until the end of February 2007 when he was appointed Managing Director, British Gas. He was also Managing Director, Europe between July 2004 and September 2006.
Formerly, he was Finance Director of UDV Guinness from 1999 and Group Treasurer and Director of Risk Management of Diageo plc from 1997. Previously, he spent 15 years with BP plc in various international oil and gas exploration roles. He is also a Non-Executive Director and the Chairman of the audit committee of Kingfisher plc.
