Lincs offshore wind farm construction underway

11 March 2011 Posted by Alice Gill     1 comment

I'm new to the world of blogging, so let me introduce myself. My name is Alice and I work in the Public Affairs team for Renewables. Our focus is managing all the externally facing aspects of our wind farm projects which tends to keep us very busy and this week has been no exception to the rule. So let me give you an insight...

Spring is in the air and the atmosphere in the renewables team is buzzing with activity... Lincs offshore construction is now underway.

The jacket (supporting structure) for the offshore substation has been lifted onto a barge, shipped out to its new home and is currently being secured to the seabed. This is the first offshore structure to be put in place for Lincs offshore wind farm. Once this is complete, vessels will be chugging around the area in the following months laying turbine foundations, cables between the turbines and the cables that export the energy to shore. I've never been involved in construction of an offshore project so all this progress is very exciting.  If you want to learn some more, see Lincs wind farm.

While offshore construction has only just kicked off, work has been underway onshore for a year now. The two transformers were successfully delivered to the substation site a couple of weeks ago, and even though I was involved with the plans for the delivery I didn't quite comprehend the scale of these things. Look at the photo - the lorry is huge! We had to write to local residents in some locations to ask them to avoid parking there on delivery days.

So keep your eye on these blogs and you will find out what we get up to day to day in the renewable team.

Enjoy the weekend!

Great stuff.

Please can we have some photos of the dockside action too? Something like this: http://www.eurotrib.com/story/2010/2/26/175155/402

And maybe something showing the exact area of the windfarm, and working ships in the area - like this: http://www.energynumbers.info/live-mapping-of-ships-building-walney-offshore-windfarm

Thank you very much for your comments. We are filming and taking photos all through the construction process and I'll have some more images and videos to share shortly.
